The Big Idea: Territorial expansion is influenced by political, economic, and social factors and often leads to conflict.
Essential Question: What were the motivations, contributions, and consequences of the European explorers.
Historical Background: Native Indian tribes had been inhabitants of the land we now call the Americas for over 10,000 years. Groups had settled in various areas of the America and developed their own unique cultures based on the resources of the area and the traditions of their ancestors. All was relatively routine until 1492 when Columbus’s discovery of a “New World” set off a desperate race between competing European nations, Spain, France, Portugal, and England. All were determined to claim the New World for their own.
The Europeans were determined to impose their customs, traditions, and a sense of superiority on the locals and those unwilling to compromise are destined to be conquered. The conflict is inevitable as the Native Indians defend themselves and their territories against these strange invaders. How did political, economic, and social factors lead to this conflict? And most importantly, when the dust settles, who will be left standing?
Project explanation: You will be working with a partner to research, create a portfolio, and present the conflicts between Native Indians and the Invading Explorers and the impacting results caused by these conflicting cultures. Your goal during this project is to work with your partner to research both cultures and:

Project explanation: You will be working with a partner to research, create a portfolio, and present the conflicts between Native Indians and the Invading Explorers and the impacting results caused by these conflicting cultures. Your goal during this project is to work with your partner to research both cultures and:
- Compare and contrast each culture’s point of view on territory, lifestyle, and religion.
- Decide the cause of the conflict between the two cultures. (If you have an explorer then you must tell us about your explorers culture. What was it like where he came from, what were his motivations for exploring, what were his contributions, and what were the consequences?)
- Analyze the impact that conflict had on both cultures.
- Present your research findings in a presentation.
- Showcase the clash of cultures and the impact it had and answer the questions: “How did political, economic, and social factors lead to conflict?” and “Who is left standing after the dust settles?”
